Hand-Knotted Afghan Runner (8' by 2’)
Afghan Mushwani Mixed-Weave Runner — Hand-Knotted Wool, ~8' × 2'
A vintage hand-knotted tribal runner made by the Mushwani of western Afghanistan, known for their mastery of pile weaving. The weaver lays down a flatwoven kilim ground, then knots pile over select motifs so the pattern rises from the surface — among the most painstaking techniques in tribal weaving. Likely from the 1970's to 1980s.
The runner has a central column of diamond medallions, framed by latch-hook borders and warmed with rust red, terracotta, and gold. 100% wool on a wool foundation: hard-wearing enough for a hallway, kitchen galley, or bedside, and alive with the small irregularities that only come from a piece made by hand on a tribal loom.
